SPOKANE, Wash. – The YWCA Spokane is on track to receive 6,000 calls this year through their domestic violence helpline, marking the highest number in a decade.

This month, YWCA Spokane aimed to raise $50,000 to support the advocates handling the increased volume of calls.

Briana Burner from YWCA Spokane highlighted the importance of the initial contact for survivors.

“I hear all the time from survivors that that first contact, the thing that really strikes them about it, is being believed,” Burner said.

Burner explained that isolation, intimidation and dominance are key factors YWCA Spokane assesses in potential domestic violence situations. Those answering the phones provide a critical safety line.
