The City of Evanston is implementing a new policy to dispatch a police supervisor to reports of incidents involving federal agents in the community.
The police response is part of a new policy implemented by the mayor to push for transparency and accountability.
The order comes as an immigration enforcement operation occurred in Evanston Friday just steps from Chute Middle School. Witnesses said at least three people were detained during an encounter with federal agents.
“It was awful, there were ICE agents and [Chicago Border Patrol] CBP agents pointing guns at community members, pepper spray in the face of community members within eyesight of our Chute Middle School students and that is not okay,” said Allie Harned, Chute Middle School social worker.
