Just weeks ago, Helena Moreno made history.

Handily winning the race for mayor in January, after taking the oath of office, she'll become the city's first Latina mayor. Advertisement

It's a far cry from where she was 20 years ago.

Moreno started at WDSU in 2001, and was the morning anchor — with experience covering major weather events — when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005

"It's so weird, so go back in your mind and think of things in New Orleans and then say, oh wait, that was because of Hurricane Katrina," Moreno said.

And seeing the destruction, the loss of life, and the chaos that ensued to get people back home and made whole changed Moreno.
