While it is not exactly a news flash, winning an NJSIAA sectional football championship is hard to do.
It takes good players, good coaches and good fortune to win just one. Imagine what it takes to win three, six or New Jersey’s all-time best, nine-straight Group 4 championships.
Memorial of West New York, coached by legendary Joe Coviello won consecutive state titles between 1948 and 1956. Coviello died in 2002 at the age of 88.
From 1924 to 1945, Memorial had a record of 48-110-21. That all changed rapidly under Coviello. Between 1949-57, Coviello’s teams won 70 of 71 games and the nine championships.
Coviello was named one of the 50 all-time greatest coaches by NJ.com in 2018, as was one of Coviello’s former players and assistant coaches, Warren Wolf .
