The editorial board of The New York Times is laying out an alarming trend toward autocracy under President Donald Trump .

In a new analysis , the board outlined a list of a dozen markers of “democratic erosion,” along with the help of scholars who study it. It included tactics that, according to the board, Trump has already implemented or started to as he heads into the 10th month of his second term.

“Our country is still not close to being a true autocracy, in the mold of Russia or China,” the board wrote in its findings on Friday. “But once countries begin taking steps away from democracy, the march often continues.”

It continued: “We offer these 12 markers as a warning of how much Americans have already lost and how much more we still could lose.”
