MONROE — A teenager was killed Saturday morning after being hit on the side of a Frenchtown Township road.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a 15-year-old boy from Carleton, Mich., was walking southbound, close to the white fog line, on the northbound shoulder of N. Telegraph Road, south of Paree Street.
At about 1:30 a.m., he was struck by an SUV driven by Mary Spurlock, 31, of Newport, Mich., the sheriff said. The teen was transported to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital in Trenton, Mich., where he was pronounced dead.
The vehicle stopped at a nearby gas station. Ms. Spurlock was initially unaware she struck a pedestrian, the sheriff said.
The driver was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured. Driver inattention was deemed a factor in the crash.
