CHICO — Bored with the Chico food scene and homesick for Louisiana, Steven Perrot started The Gumbo Shop with his wife Lacie to bring Cajun cooking to Butte County.

“All of my recipes, everything that I’m using is what I grew up with,” Steven Perrot said, “and if I can’t do it right, if I can’t taste what I grew up with, I’m not going to do it.”

The business launched Sept. 3 with the Perrot couple offering their cuisine at pop-up markets around town. Just 15 days later, they received an offer to partner with the Golden Beaver Distillery, serving their food at the Park Avenue Still House.

“The reception we’ve received has been humbling,” said Steven Perrot. “Everyone has been real excited about what we’re doing.”
