Bayswater City are riding high in the Australian Championship after a 1-0 win over Metrostars in their first home game in the national second-tier soccer competition.

A second-half goal from Gyles Davies sealed victory over the visitors from Adelaide at Frank Drago Reserve on Sunday.

Metrostars had slightly the better of a cagey first half, with Bayswater goalkeeper Lewis Italiano making a smart save from a free kick in stoppage time.

But Bayswater took the lead in the 56th minute when Davies netted with a low finish after a free kick from the right wing caused a scramble inside the penalty box.

The goal lifted Bayswater, and they started to gain control, although Italiano soon denied Jake Porter from close range to protect the home side’s lead.
