The Kansas City Chiefs had a chance to make a late comeback against the Buffalo Bills in the Week 9 edition of the AFC rivalry.
Buffalo was leading 28-21 when it sent Matt Prater out to attempt a 52-yard field goal with less than a minute left in regulation. A make would have effectively iced the game for the Bills and given them their fifth consecutive regular-season win over the Chiefs.
However, Prater's kick was slightly too far to the right. It bounced off the upright and to the ground, giving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs a chance to mount a potential game-tying or game-winning drive with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Ultimately, Mahomes was able to take a couple of shots toward the end zone after the Chiefs gained 18 yards on a pass to Xavier Worthy. The quarterback's first attempt was feathered to speedster Tyquan Thornton, who got his hands on the ball between two defenders.
However, safety Cole Bishop managed to knock the ball to the ground. It was one of four pass defenses during a career-best day for the 2024 second-round pick.
Mahomes' final attempt didn't quite reach the end zone, as Buffalo's defensive front managed to pressure him before his throw. That ball was knocked harmlessly to the ground at the 5-yard line, sealing the Bills' win.
Buffalo can thank its defense for containing Mahomes – who completed just 15 of 34 passes for 250 yards with no touchdowns and an interception – while Josh Allen and James Cook provided the team a spark on offense.
Allen was near-perfect, going 23 of 26 passing for 273 yards and a touchdown while adding two scores on the ground, leading Buffalo to a crucial win over a team that remains its primary obstacle in the AFC race.

Bills vs. Chiefs instant takeaways
- The Chiefs need to add help at running back: Kareem Hunt was serviceable while replacing the injured Isiah Pacheco, but no other Kansas City rusher had more than seven yards. Pacheco may be back following the team's Week 10 bye, but it would still behoove the Chiefs to add another running back to their committee. It would go a long way toward supporting Mahomes and the passing game while also preventing opposing teams from selling out to pressure the 30-year-old quarterback.
- Maxwell Hairston may emerge as a weapon for the Bills' defense: Hairston was a first-round pick out of Kentucky, but the cornerback missed the first six games of the season with a knee injury. He managed to intercept Patrick Mahomes after tracking down his underthrown pass on Sunday, while also showing off his deep speed, running stride-for-stride with Xavier Worthy on a downfield pass. If Hairston can continue to make plays and stay with speed receivers, it will give the Bills an element their defense previously lacked on the outside.
- Josh Allen will be in the MVP conversation again: Allen continues to perform at a high level and was particularly sharp against the Chiefs. He accounted for three of Buffalo's four scores and 292 yards of their total offense. The 29-year-old has gotten more support this season from James Cook, but he should still put himself in the conversation to be the NFL's first back-to-back MVP since Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and 2021.

Bills vs. Chiefs highlights
Bills knock down two Patrick Mahomes Hail Mary passes to clinch win
Mahomes nearly had a TD completion to Tyquan Thornton with 3 seconds left in regulation, but Cole Bishop helped break the pass up. Then, Mahomes' second Hail Mary pass failed to get to the end zone before the Bills knocked it down.
Buffalo has now won five consecutive regular-season games against Kansas City.
Matt Prater doinks 52-yard field goal off right upright
The Bills weren't able to run out the clock, but positioned themselves for a long field goal with 26 seconds left. Prater's kick was no good, and Patrick Mahomes will have 22 seconds left to get a TD.
Josh Allen completes pass to James Cook on third-and-3 for first down
The Bills picked up a couple of first downs on their drive and have forced the Chiefs to use all three of their timeouts.
Buffalo now has a first-and-10 after Cook turned Allen's dump-off into a first down. There's 2:31 left in regulation, so the 2-minute warning is the only time the clock will stop again.
Maxwell Hairston intercepts Patrick Mahomes deep pass on third-and-10
Joey Bosa got pressure on Mahomes on a third-and-10, which forced the Chiefs quarterback to launch a deep shot in the direction of Xavier Worthy. Mahomes' throw came up just short, as he was not able to fully follow through before Bosa got to him, and Hairston was able to catch it.
The Bills will get the ball back on their own 33-yard line. There's just under four and a half minutes left in regulation.
Chiefs sack Josh Allen on back-to-back plays to force punt
Kansas City's defense sacked Allen on back-to-back plays to force a Mitch Wishnowsky punt.
Nikko Remigio fair caught Wishnowsky's punt at his own 13-yard line with 6:46 left in regulation. The Chiefs will now look to mount a game-tying or go-ahead drive.
Michael Hoecht injury update
Hoecht, a key member of the Bills' defensive line rotation, suffered a non-contact Achilles injury on the Chiefs' most recent touchdown drive. He has already been ruled out for the game but is remaining on the sidelines to watch the end of the game with his teammates, the CBS broadcast reports.
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Kareem Hunt takes fourth-and-1 carry into end zone for TD
A few plays after the fourth-and-17 conversion, Hunt was able to convert another fourth down. This time, it was just of the short-yardage variety, and he pounded the rock in from the 2-yard line.
The Chiefs attempted a two-point conversion following the score. Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce open over the middle of the field and got the ball to his veteran tight end. The Chiefs now trail the Bills 28-21 with 11:32 left in regulation.
Bills 28, Chiefs 21
Patrick Mahomes hits Rashee Rice for 29-yard gain on fourth-and-17
The Chiefs decided to go for it on fourth-and-long just across midfield. Mahomes had plenty of time in the pocket and was able to find Rice wide open past the sticks for a huge gain.
How old is Chiefs coach Andy Reid?
Reid is 67 years old. He is the second-oldest active NFL coach behind only Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll (74).
Reid has been an NFL head coach since 1999, his age-41 season. He has a 278-149-1 record across his 27 seasons in that role.
Bills leading Chiefs 28-13 after three quarters
Buffalo has outplayed Kansas City through three quarters. The Bills have outgained the Chiefs 355-236 while holding the ball for 26:03, compared to Kansas City's 18:57.
That said, Patrick Mahomes is doing his best to keep the Chiefs afloat. He has completed multiple deep passes in third-and-long scenarios, with his most recent being a 33-yard strike to Hollywood Brown. That put Kansas City across midfield and should set the Chiefs up to have a scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter.
The Bills will continue to rely on their defense and Josh Allen to carry them. The reigning NFL MVP has completed 21 of 24 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown while adding 12 yards and two touchdowns on four carries.
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Bills push Josh Allen into end zone for second rushing TD
Buffalo orchestrated an eight-play, 74-yard drive in just under four minutes after their latest defensive hold. Allen capped it off with another 1-yard touchdown run during which offensive guard O'Cyrus Torrence helped push him into the end zone on a third-and-goal carry.
Matt Prater made his fourth extra point of the day to put the Bills up 28-13 with 1:34 left in the third quarter.
Bills 28, Chiefs 13
Chiefs forced to punt after controversial intentional grounding penalty, sack
The Chiefs went backward on the final two plays of their second drive of the second half.
The first play saw Patrick Mahomes throw a pass away under pressure and get called for intentional grounding. However, it appeared Michael Hoecht may have tipped the pass before it hit the ground. The officials did not see the tip and the play wasn't reviewable, causing the Chiefs to lose 10 yards.
Kansas City then lost another nine yards on third down, when Mahomes tried to scramble away from pressure but Buffalo managed to swarm him. Matt Araiza's punt traveled 60 yards and netted 49 yards of field position after an 11-yard Bills return.
Patrick Mahomes hits Travis Kelce for 28-yard gain on third-and-9
The Bills had a chance to force a second consecutive three-and-out and were getting pressure on Mahomes. The veteran quarterback managed to navigate the pocket and loft a perfectly thrown pass to Kelce, who found a pocket of space in a sea of Bills defenders.
The play put the Chiefs at their own 40-yard line, flipping the field after they were originally pinned deep by Mitch Wishnowsky's punt.
Chiefs force Bills punt after Nick Bolton stops Khalil Shakir screen pass
The Bills were facing a third-and-10 just across midfield when Joe Brady dialed up a screen pass to Khalil Shakir. The veteran receiver had one man to beat to get to space, but couldn't get by Nick Bolton, who used good closing speed and tackling form to bring down the slot man.
Shakir's reception went for no gain, so the Bills were forced to punt. The Chiefs let the ball bounce to a stop at their 11-yard line before Buffalo long snapper Reid Ferguson downed it with 8:38 left in the third quarter.
Who is Cole Bishop?
Bishop is a second-year safety who the Bills selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Utah for three seasons, generating 198 tackles, 28.5 TFL, 7.5 sacks, three interceptions and 12 pass defense across 36 games.
Bishop started four games as a rookie but entered the 2025 NFL season as a starter for Buffalo's defense. He entered Week 9 having logged 34 tackles, two sacks, one interception and one pass defense across seven games.
Bishop has already recorded an additional five tackles and three pass defenses early in the third quarter of the game against the Chiefs.
Chiefs go three-and-out after two more splash plays from Cole Bishop
Bishop, a second-round pick by the Bills in 2024, is having one of the best games of his career. He helped tackle Xavier Worthy for a loss on a second-and-5 before breaking up yet another Patrick Mahomes pass on third-and-7 to force Kansas City to punt on its first possession of the second half.
The Bills will get the ball at their own 17-yard line after a 49-yard kick from Matt Araiza and a fair catch.
Travis Kelce targeted on first play of second half
Kelce left the field early in the second half after taking a shot to the ribs from Bills safety Cole Bishop. The 36-year-old was examined at halftime, according to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, but he was good to go to start the second half.
Have the Buffalo Bills won a Super Bowl?
No, the Bills have never won a Super Bowl. The franchise made it to the Big Game four consecutive seasons from the 1990-93 NFL seasons but never managed to win it.
Travis Kelce takes hard hit on final Chiefs offensive play of first half
Patrick Mahomes tried to fit a pass into Kelce in the end zone on third-and-goal at the end of the first half. The duo failed to connect, but the 36-year-old tight end was hit hard by Cole Bishop as part of the play.
Kelce appeared to be in pain after the hit but still managed to get off the field without a problem. He had one catch for 20 yards in the first half.
Bills leading Chiefs 21-13 at halftime
Per usual, the Bills and Chiefs have engaged in a back-and-forth battle, but Buffalo currently has the edge. Josh Allen's squad outgained Kansas City 246-173 in the first half while winning the time of possession battle 17:21 to 12:39 in the first half.
Allen has been near-perfect as a passer, completing 15 of 17 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown. He has found consistent success targeting his tight ends -- Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox and Jackson Hawes have combined for 5 catches, 123 yards and a touchdown -- and figures to keep leaning on James Cook (11 carries, 64 yards) in the second half.
Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes started slowly but started to heat up on Kansas City's half-ending field goal drive. He has completed 7 of 15 passes for 123 yards while showing a strong connection with Rashee Rice (three catches, 50 yards).
The Chiefs will get the ball to begin the second half. It will be interesting to see what adjustments Andy Reid makes on offense and whether Sean McDermott's defense can continue containing Mahomes at a solid clip.
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Bills come up with goal-line stand to hold Chiefs to field goal
Patrick Mahomes completed a 40-yard pass to Hollywood Brown to put the Chiefs on the 1-yard line with 20 seconds left in the first half and one timeout. The Bills were able to stop a Kareem Hunt run and force two Mahomes incompletions, leading Andy Reid to settle for a field goal.
Harrison Butker nailed the chip shot, so the Bills' lead is down to 21-13 with 3 seconds left in the first half. The Chiefs will get the ball to start the first half, which may explain Reid's choice to take the points heading into halftime.
Bills 21, Chiefs 13
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Josh Allen powers in TD on QB sneak to give Buffalo 21-10 lead
The Bills got inside the 5-yard line after a 30-yard completion to tight end Dawson Knox. James Cook was stopped on a run at the 1-yard line, but that allowed Allen to power in a score on Buffalo's version of the "Tush Push," during which fullback Reggie Gilliam pushed the quarterback behind to help create the score.
Matt Prater made the extra point and the Bills have an 11-point lead with 1:33 remaining in the first half. Patrick Mahomes will have that time and a timeout to get Kansas City into scoring range.
Bills 21, Chiefs 10
Cole Bishop breaks up back-to-back passes to force Chiefs turnover on downs
The Chiefs stopped the Bills on fourth down earlier in the game. Buffalo returned the favor, as Bishop broke up consecutive Patrick Mahomes passes to give the ball back to the Bills.
The Bills will now have 4:12 remaining before halftime to build upon their 14-10 lead.
Ty Johnson punches in 3-yard TD to give Bills lead back
The Bills didn't waste much time answering the Chiefs' field goal. Josh Allen completed big passes to Jackson Hawes and Dalton Kincaid (46 yards) to get the Bills into scoring range. Johnson capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown run that saw him run behind left guard David Edwards to put Buffalo back on top.
Matt Prater made the extra point and the Bills are leading 14-10 with 6:39 remaining in the second quarter.
Josh Allen tosses a nifty shovel pass to Jackson Hawes to start Bills drive
Allen and Patrick Mahomes are both known for their creative playmaking abilities. The Bills starter showed that off on a first down play where he tried to scramble but saw his running lane closed by a Chiefs defender.
How did Allen respond? He saw Hawes breaking open over the middle of the field. The quarterback tossed an impressive shovel pass to him as he neared the line of scrimmage, creating a big gain and a first down to open the drive.
Who is Josh Allen married to?
Josh Allen is married to actress Hailee Steinfeld. The two were wed during the 2025 NFL offseason in a ceremony in California.
Steinfeld is best known for her roles in True Grit, The Edge of Seventeen, the Pitch Perfect movies and, most recently, Sinners.
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Harrison Butker makes 46-yard field goal
Patrick Mahomes was sacked on the first play of the Chiefs' drive, but he did well to rebound with a 24-yard strike to Rashee Rice over the middle of the field. A 13-yard Kareem Hunt run then put the Chiefs in field goal range before the team stalled out.
The Bills tried to ice Butker, but his kick was dead center. That gives the Chiefs their first lead of the game at 10-7 with 9:27 remaining in the first quarter.
Chiefs 10, Bills 7
James Cook injury update
CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reported the Bills' starting running back had his foot/ankle taped after Buffalo's first drive. Cook is still in the game, but the situation will bear monitoring.
Bills go three-and-out after Chiefs touchdown
Josh Allen and the Bills have not yet been able to replicate the success they enjoyed on their first drive. Allen was sacked two yards behind the line of scrimmage on a third-and-3 on Buffalo's latest possession, which forced a Mitch Wishnowsky punt.
The Chiefs will get the ball back at their own 37-yard line after a 48-yard punt, a 5-yard return and a 15-yard facemask penalty on the Bills.
Why was Rashee Rice suspended?
Rice was suspended for the first six games of the 2025 NFL season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
The suspension stemmed from Rice's involvement in a high-speed car crash in March 2024. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury, and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. A Dallas district court judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail and five years of probation because of the incident.
Rice did not appeal his suspension and missed Kansas City's first six games.
Bills vs. Chiefs score: Rashee Rice turns 3-yard carry into touchdown
The Chiefs came out in an exotic formation to open the second quarter. Patrick Mahomes was split out wide while receiver Rashee Rice was in the backfield, preparing to take the snap.
Rice, the team's top receiver, took the snap and ran to the left, getting a block from Kareem Hunt and waltzing into the end-zone untouched. It was the first rushing touchdown of the third-year wide-out's career.
Harrison Butker made the extra point and the Chiefs and Bills are all square at 7-7.
Bills 7, Chiefs 7
End of first quarter: Bills leading but Chiefs to open second quarter with goal-to-go opportunity
The first quarter of the Bills vs. Chiefs game flew by. That was thanks largely to Buffalo's game-opening drive, which ate up seven minutes of game time, and the quarterbacks combining to complete 10 of 14 passes in the first quarter.
Josh Allen has been the more prolific of the two, completing 8 of 10 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have also leaned on James Cook, who has all seven of the team's carries and a strong 42 yards against Kansas City's run defense.
Patrick Mahomes, meanwhile, has completed 2 of 4 passes for 26 yards while the Chiefs have leaned on their running game to move the ball on their second drive. Kareem Hunt, Brashard Smith and Rashee Rice have combined for 21 yards on five carries and figure to get plenty more work against what has been, to date, a leaky Buffalo run defense.
Bryan Cook breaks up Josh Allen pass on fourth-and-2
The Bills decided to stay aggressive after Dalton Kincaid was tackled short of the line to gain on a third down near midfield.
Allen had time in the pocket and tried to get a pass to Khalil Shakir over the middle of the field. Cook timed his break perfectly and managed to knock the ball to the ground, giving the Chiefs the ball back at their own 47-yard line.
Chiefs go three-and-out on first possession
The Chiefs' first drive lasted just 52 seconds. Kareem Hunt started it with a 3-yard run but after that, Patrick Mahomes threw consecutive incompletions to force a Matt Araiza punt.
The Bills got the ball back at their own 30-yard line following a short, 37-yard punt by Araiza. Josh Allen and Co. will look to continue dominating time of possession as the first quarter continues.
Bills vs Chiefs score: Josh Allen hits Kincaid for 23-yard TD to open scoring
The Bills got the ball to start their Week 9 battle with the Chiefs and ran a methodical, 11-play, 84-yard drive against the Chiefs' defense. It ended when Josh Allen found Dalton Kincaid for a 23-yard touchdown on a third-and-8 after linebacker Drue Tranquill fell down in coverage.
Matt Prater made the extra point to give the Bills a 7-0 lead. The drive lasted exactly 7 minutes in length.

Bills vs Chiefs prediction
It's hard to bet against the Chiefs right now. Patrick Mahomes is coming off a two interception game on "Monday Night Football," but the Chiefs were able to overcome it to win handily over the Commanders, 28-7. The Bills are coming off a statement win, but that was more thanks to a porous defense that allowed 216 yards to James Cook. Don't expect that formula to be replicated on Sunday afternoon. Chiefs win a tight one.
Prediction: Chiefs 26, Bills 24
