LEWISTON, Maine — As the nights get colder, Kaydenz Kitchen opens its warming center to offer Lewiston's unhoused a refuge from the cold.

Alter A/L Warming Center is operated by the same team behind Kaydenz Kitchen, known for its food pantry, thrift store, and other community resources.

This winter will be the first for the warming center at its new location at 70 Horton St. Beginning Saturday, the center will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., offering about 100 spaces, according to staff.

Linda Scott, administrative director of Kaydenz Kitchen, says she is eager to welcome people to the warming shelter.

"I think just about every single one said that they want to be here, even though they're not scheduled tonight. They want to be here for the opening night," Scott said. "We have all built
