Last week, My Favorite Ride was a story about a 1990 Ford fire truck used as a hearse for a firefighter's funeral. This week's step-back-in-time column from 2021 features another unlikely hearse. This week, I talked to funeral director Rondale Brishaber, who told me the 65-year-old Chevy is used for about 20% of the funerals at his business.

SALEM — Back when this station wagon was shiny and new, when Ed Hollis bought it in 1960, the car had but one purpose: When someone died, it was dispatched to pick up the body.

“He bought the car new in 1960, I’m not sure where,” said Rondale Brishaber, the current owner of the Chevrolet Biscayne. He’s also the proprietor, embalmer and head funeral director at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Salem. “At that time, it was just to make transports.”
