A major incident was declared after a train derailed earlier this morning, sparking a 'do not attempt to travel' warning.

An Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to London Euston was reported to have derailed at Shap in Cumbria at around 6.10am.

Medics raced to the scene but Avanti said there had been 'no reported injuries at this stage'.

The incident has resulted in all lines being blocked north of Preston, the Mirror reports.

This affects several services running through the Midlands, including the 9.45am Glasgow Central to London Euston train, which travels via Birmingham New Street. This service will now terminate at Motherwell.
