A motorist has been issued a ticket for driving too slowly in the middle lane of the M6, raising concerns about road safety. The incident occurred in Warwickshire, where police reported that the driver was travelling at speeds between 55mph and 60mph. This was deemed inappropriate as there was no slower-moving traffic in the inside lane at the time.

Warwickshire Police stated that the driver was pulled over by officers from the A Unit OPU after they observed the vehicle in lane two, which is typically used for overtaking. The police highlighted that the driver was not showing reasonable consideration for other road users.

In a post on Facebook, the police explained, "Officers sighted a driver on the M6 Northbound in lane 2 driving at between 55-60mph with no slower moving traffic or obstructions in lane 1." They added that the driver would likely have to attend a driver improvement course, which incurs a fee.

Authorities have noted an increase in such incidents, with more drivers seemingly unaware of the dangers posed by slow driving in overtaking lanes. Police warned that other motorists expect vehicles in these lanes to adhere to the speed limit, leading to unnecessary lane changes and potential hazards.

The police emphasised that while the speed limit is a maximum, it is poor driving practice to occupy an overtaking lane at significantly lower speeds without justification. They advised drivers to keep to the left unless overtaking or avoiding hazards, as failure to do so could result in a fine of £100 and up to three penalty points on their driving licence.
