DES MOINES, Iowa (WOI) - WOI reports, despite a federal ruling directing the Trump administration to tap into a contingency fund to fund November SNAP benefits, Iowa Health and Human Services said Saturday it will not load SNAP benefits onto cards “until all states receive further clarification.”
Local food pantries have already braced for the change , but for the Des Moines Catholic Worker, an organization serving the homeless and food insecure, demand is par for the course at 700 meals per week — for now.
“Our population, on a monthly basis, rises and falls with the checks that people get,” said co-founder Frank Cordaro. “Now, when they stop giving those checks, well, we’ll be in new territory.” Cordaro said he’s seen more people go hungry and unsheltered each year.
