Shillong, Nov 3: Cabinet Minister and Amlarem legislator Lahkmen Rymbui expressed concern over the Umngot river’s deteriorating condition, stating that a muddy Umngot river is a loss for the livelihood of the people.
Rymbui attributed the river’s muddy state to soil dumping by a company engaged in the construction of the Shillong-Dawki road just after the Laitlyngkot area.
He emphasized the river’s importance to tourism and local communities, saying that the Umngot river is famous for its crystal-clear water and is loved by people who do boating and fishing.
He said that in the last few weeks, due to road expansion not near the Umngot but below Laitlyngkot, a small tributary or rivulet flowing to the Umngot was affected. He explained that a heavy landslide occurred in that area before P
