Portland voters should not approve a 75% increase for the proposed five-year parks levy, (“ Portland asks voters to stomach big property tax increase or watch parks deteriorate, ” Oct. 17).
Shame on us for how we let Portland handle the last five-year levy. Double shame on us if we allow Portland to increase that amount by 75% in the proposed levy. This recklessness makes virtually every residence in Portland less affordable and increases homelessness.
Meanwhile, we have many unsafe elderly street trees and homeowners can’t afford to pay for their management. Also meanwhile, the city owns substantial amounts of parkland that are barely used and should be sold at low prices for affordable housing projects. This also reduces existing park maintenance costs.
