A spokesman for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has refused to say if rail travel in the UK is safe following the Huntingdon train stabbings.

Downing Street accepted there was "more to do" to ensure the safety of train passengers across the UK, despite incidents such as Saturday's knife attack being "mercifully rare”.

Eleven people were injured after a knife attack on the 6.25pm Doncaster to London King's Cross LNER service on Saturday (November 1), which made an emergency stop at Huntingdon after passengers alerted the driver to the incident.

Eleven people were injured, with one "heroic" member of LNER staff critical but stable in hospital. Among those hurt was Scunthorpe United footballer Jonathon Gjoshe, 22.
