A man was seriously injured in a fiery crash on Route 8 in Shelton over the weekend.

The crash was reported on Route 8 North near Exit 9 just after 12:45 a.m. on Saturday when a 39-year-old Fairfield man who was driving a 2021 BMW M5 north in the right lane went off the right side of the road and struck a metal beam guardrail, according to Connecticut State Police .

The BMW became engulfed in flames before traveling across both lanes of Route 8 and striking a guardrail in the median, state police said.

The driver suffered traumatic lower leg injuries, according to state police. Responding troopers applied multiple tourniquets before the victim was taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital. His condition remains unclear.
