PORTLAND, Maine — A fire Sunday evening at an apartment building on Forest Avenue in Portland has been contained, according to the Portland Fire Department.
Fire crews were called to Deering Pavilion for smoke and fire alarm activation across multiple floors. While crews were on the way, dispatchers received a report of a kitchen fire on the sixth floor, the department said in a news release. Additional crews were called.
Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from one unit, where sprinklers had contained the fire. Crews put out the remaining fire and evacuated residents from the sixth floor while residents on other floors sheltered in place.
No injuries were reported, the fire department said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
