MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Police Department (MPD) got the word out on Monday about its new training program to help members of the community know what to do in emergencies.

CRASE is a program and an acronym for Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events. People can use the methodology in active shooter events.

Active shooter events are fairly rare, but MPD says training like this is like "Stop, Drop, and Roll" training. It's good information to have if you ever need it.

"If you've heard of run, hide, fight, it's very, very similar. They've changed the terminology just to show that there's really things that we can do in that space," said Lt. Jimmy Imoehl. "It's not just a matter of hiding and hoping for the best, but we can actively take a role in our safety in those situations."
