TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida lawmaker has introduced a bill that would enact new safety measures for people riding electric bicycles, including that riders of bikes reaching high speeds must have a valid driver license.
Under House Bill 243, filed by Rep. Yvette Benarroch (R-Marco Island), teens who have not yet obtained a learner's driver license or anyone who does not hold a valid driver license would be prohibited from operating a class 3 electric bicycle.
A class 3 electric bike is defined as any e-bike that goes up to 28 mph, according to Florida statute. HB 243 would add a new definition for electric vehicles with a motor of 750 watts or more and that are capable of speeds greater than 28 mph, describing them as electric motorcycles.
