WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Low Income Energy Assistance Program is paused in Kansas due to the federal government shutdown, according to the Kansas Department for Children and Families.
The department stated that it is awaiting approval of the federal LIEAP program, which covers a portion of energy costs for eligible households. The money is provided by the federal government and then distributed by the state.
The 2025 LIEAP application period has ended, according to Kansas DCF. The department said the start date for the 2026 LIEAP payments depends on federal funding, which cannot be approved until the federal government reopens.
Until Congress can vote on funding for LIEAP, Evergy, a major electricity company in Kansas, said customers have options to help manage their power bills.
