SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- The Springfield Police Department is issuing a warning to the public after several fraudulent solicitations were reported in October.
The police department said on Oct. 16, several male suspects asked for donations, claiming that the money would go to the Boys and Girls Club. The suspects requested credit card donations and then charged amounts much higher than what was agreed upon.
The police department said this happened at several west side retail areas.
After investigating, officials confirmed that the suspects were not affiliated with the Boys and Girls Club in any way. Now, the police department is providing residents several tips to protect themselves from similar scams. This includes: • Check with the business whether the organization is authorized
