November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, an important time to raise awareness and promote healthier lifestyles to prevent and manage diabetes.
Diabetes is a disease that causes high blood glucose or sugar. The hormone insulin is needed to move the sugar, but diabetes limits the body’s ability to make enough insulin. When the body can’t make enough insulin or uses the insulin the right way, sugar builds up in the blood. This can cause harm to eyes, kidneys and nervous system.
But here’s the thing: More than 37 million Americans have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it.
