BLOOMINGTON — For each of the last three men’s basketball coaches it was able, Indiana turned their hiring news conferences into celebrations.

Tom Crean was announced in the now-demolished Hoosier Room, where he delivered “It’s Indiana,” while Kelvin Sampson and Archie Miller both met the job on the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall floor. Each event was opened to at least some measure of Hoosiers fans. For Sampson and Miller, a few hundred fans turned up inside IU’s iconic old arena. Only Mike Woodson did not receive such fanfare, and that was due to COVID-19 restrictions.
