A debate over how to tackle homelessness in the French Quarter has split members of the agency responsible for overseeing the neighborhood's affairs.

Some board members of the French Quarter Management District are proposing to put a portion of the agency's 2026 budget towards providing case management and subsidies for homeless people to move into long-term housing, in line with its priorities in recent years.

Others want to redirect the funding towards mental health treatment and shelter services.

The full board of commissioners will weigh the competing proposals — which were approved by two of the district's committees, one last week and one on Monday — at its Nov. 17 meeting.
