GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - It’s Election Day for a referendum on Gainesville Regional Utilities meaning voters will decide whether they want the utility to stay with the governor-appointed GRU Authority Board or go back under the city commission’s control.

In July of 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed a state board of directors to control Gainesville Regional Utilities, following the signing of a state law that gave him the authority to do so.

Last year, city of Gainesville voters approved a ballot amendment that would return control of the utility to the city however, a judge ruled the language was too unclear.

City leaders then re-wrote the proposal and put the referendum on the ballot for in an attempt to once again take back control of GRU
