An 18-year-old man was fighting for his life Tuesday after the car he was driving crashed into a lamp post in the city’s east end.

Montreal police said the incident occurred at 12:10 a.m. on Perras Blvd. near 54th Ave. in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies—Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The route the car was travelling prior to impact has yet to be established. Firefighters needed hydraulic pliers to free the driver and passenger, also 18, from the wreckage.

The passenger’s injuries are not deemed to be life threatening, however the driver sustained critical injuries to his upper body.

Collision reconstruction analysts were at the scene early Tuesday to try to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
