Head Start programs are closed in some Ohio communities because of the government shutdown, but Toledo is not yet at risk.

Head Start provides early learning, nutrition, health screenings, and family support services to low-income children from birth to 5 years old.

“Right now, there is no impact to Head Start in the Toledo area,” said Julie Stone, executive director of the Ohio Head Start Association.

“The closest impact as of November 1 is in Allen County in west-central Ohio,” she said.

Head Start is funded directly by the federal government and goes to local Head Start grant recipients. The grants are renewed annually on different grant cycles, Ms. Stone said.
