A 17-year-old was arrested last week in Oklahoma City in connection to the killing of L.B. Landry High School student Jyran Johnson in Algiers , New Orleans police said Monday.

Ronald Smith Jr., was arrested Oct. 27 on a count of second-degree murder after NOPD detectives determined he was a suspect in the killing of Johnson, also 17.

On. Oct. 6, 2025, police responded to a call about a shooting and found Johnson suffering from gunshot wounds in the 3700 block of Texas Drive at around 8 p.m. New Orleans EMS declared him dead on scene.

Johnson was identified as the victim and a junior at L.B. Landry High on Oct. 7. Johnson was described as a “bright and beloved student” in a press release from NOLA Public Schools.

After Smith was determined to be the perpetrator by detectives, NOPD
