BIDDEFORD, Maine — Biddeford city officials are warning residents and business owners about a scam involving fake invoices sent to people who recently submitted applications to the Biddeford Planning Board.
According to the city , victims have received fraudulent emails claiming they owe substantial unpaid fees related to their applications. The emails may include accurate personal or city information pulled from public records, such as employee names, applicant names and addresses, and in some cases may display the city seal to appear legitimate.
The city said its Planning Department did not send the emails and does not request payments by wire transfer under any circumstances. Legitimate emails from city staff will come from addresses ending in @biddefordmaine.org.
