Immigrants are urging the Iowa City Council to pass a "due process" resolution to stop federal law enforcement from entering "non-public areas" without a warrant.
A group of more than 50 immigrants and their supporters attended Monday, Nov. 3's council meeting, led by remarks from Eva and Laura Castro, the mother-in-law and fiancée of Jorge Gonzalez, respectively. Gonzalez was publicly arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at Bread Garden Market in late September .
"I am here because I believe families and immigrants deserve dignity, and that our workplaces (be) respected, and that we don't face injustices," Eva Castro said through a translator.
She said she also works at a downtown business and fears being "taken" by federal law enforcement in the same way
