WASHINGTON - From the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott to the five-year Delano grape strike, sustained economic pressure has proven a powerful force for social change in American history.
Now, a grassroots movement is testing whether the same strategy can work in just seven days.
The “ Blackout the System ” campaign is calling for Americans to stop spending money from Nov. 25 through Dec. 2, targeting one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. But unlike the historical boycotts that achieved concrete results through months or years of sustained action, this effort asks participants to withhold their dollars for a single week—raising questions about whether such a brief action can generate meaningful pressure on businesses or policymakers.
