The ongoing government shutdown is almost unprecedented. It's now tied for the longest ever.

Election Day, Nov. 4, marks the 35th day that the government has operated at a limited capacity after Congress failed to agree on appropriations for the new fiscal year.

The government shutdown that previously held the title of "longest-ever" also happened under the leadership of President Donald Trump during his first term. The government closed Dec. 22, 2018, and remained shut down into the new year.

The current shutdown began on Oct. 1 and there's no end in sight.
