ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WNDU) - The man accused of shooting and killing an off-duty firefighter in Eau Claire last year is heading to trial next week.

According to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium , 48-year-old Rigoberto Gomez was supposed to go on trial back in May, but it was rescheduled for next Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Gomez is facing several charges, including open murder , in the death of 26-year-old firefighter Chad Medlin, who prosecutors say was shot and killed outside Hometown Bar in Eau Claire last November. Another man was shot in the arm, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

An open murder charge means a jury can consider first- or second-degree murder. If found guilty of first-degree murder, Gomez would spend the rest of his life in prison.
