California is halting its landmark electric bike voucher program with no announcement and millions of dollars still in the bank, and transit advocates are frustrated that the money appears to be going to a program geared toward electric cars instead.

The Electric Bicycle Incentive Program offered up to $2,000 to lower-income Californians to purchase e-bikes beginning last year. In a statement, the California Air Resources Board said only that it has redirected the funds toward another program “due to state budget constraints.”

“This is a recent outcome of legislative direction, and we have just started informing program partners,” CARB spokesperson Joe DeAnda said in an email, adding that it’s possible funding could be allocated for the program in future years.
