A tree was damaged after strong gusts last Thursday following a yellow weather warning for wind, highlighting the decaying state of the tourist landmark.

Save the Dark Hedges, set up by campaigner Bob McCallion, warned that “a serious injury or fatality” is inevitable and has long sought for tighter restrictions to be placed on tourism in the area.

Mr McCallion called for greater safety measures during more extreme weather events.

Taking to social media, he said “It beggars belief that no public safety measures were put in place (signs/barriers etc) on Bregagh Rd during this storm – droves of people including coach parties were observed on the road.
