BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A motion has been filed seeking mental health diversion for Riddhi Patel, the protester accused of making a threat at a Bakersfield City Council meeting last year. It's scheduled for a hearing next month.
In the motion, filed Oct. 29, Deputy Public Defender Jacob Evans said Patel has been diagnosed with a qualifying disorder and should be found suitable for diversion.
Patel, 30, has stayed out of trouble for more than a year, is employed and has strong family support, Evans said.
"Ms. Patel herself, and also the specific qualifying disorder would respond well to treatment," he wrote.
A medical report attached to the motion was redacted.
If Patel is allowed into and successfully completes a diversion program, the case would be dismissed.
