Around 70 firefighters have successfully brought a significant fire at an industrial unit on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, south-east London, under control. The London Fire Brigade received reports of the blaze at 6.13pm and dispatched ten fire engines to the scene. The fire was declared under control by 9.04pm, but thick smoke continued to linger in the area, prompting a multi-agency decision to close several roads for safety reasons. As of 9.30pm, the fire service reported that a "significant amount of smoke" remained, advising residents to keep their windows and doors closed. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Due to the smoke, the following roads have been closed: - Blackwall Tunnel - northbound - Silvertown Tunnel - northbound - Blackwall Tunnel Approach - northbound from Sun in the Sands Roundabout - Tunnel Avenue - local closure - Blackwall Lane - local closure Drivers heading northbound are advised to seek alternative routes, while southbound traffic via the Blackwall Tunnel may also face disruptions. Charlton Athletic FC issued a travel warning to supporters following their home game, advising them of the road closures and suggesting alternative routes for those travelling northbound. Fire crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Deptford, Poplar, and nearby fire stations responded to the incident, highlighting the scale of the emergency response. The situation remains under observation as firefighters continue to monitor the area for any further developments.
