Trains have been suspended and bomb disposal units deployed following reports of a suspicious suitcase near Stockport station. The incident prompted the evacuation of nearby homes on Greek Street as authorities responded to the situation.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they received reports of the suspicious item just before 6pm on Tuesday, 4th November. Firefighters from Stockport and Whitehill fire stations, along with a technical rescue unit from Ashton fire station, were dispatched to the scene.
A spokesperson for the fire service stated, “Firefighters are working with Greater Manchester Police and Network Rail to make the area safe as they await the arrival of the bomb disposal unit.”
As a precaution, Stockport train station has been evacuated, and all train services through the station have been suspended until further notice. A 200-metre cordon has been established around the area to ensure public safety.
Witnesses reported that police were evacuating several homes on Greek Street, with roads including Greek Street, Shaw Heath, and Mercian Way closed off to the public. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Units are currently on-site to investigate the suitcase, which was left on a footbridge by the railway station.
Authorities are continuing to assess the situation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
