ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — St. Johns County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to suspend utility disconnections and help replenish local food pantries as the ongoing government shutdown increases financial strain both locally and around the country.

The recommendation was put forth by County Administrator Joy Andrews near the end of the commission meeting.

The commission approved a measure to allocate $200,000 from the county's emergency response fund toward food replenishment. Andrews told First Coast News the county will coordinate with 15 food pantry organizations to divide up the funds.

Food banks in Northeast Florida have reported record-breaking demand, prompting increased calls for donations and volunteers.
