With the offseason underway this week, the Mets are inching closer to decision time on Pete Alonso .

The slugging first baseman opted out of the final year of his contract ($24 million) with the Mets. He’ll explore the open market, as he did last winter, in search of a multi-year deal.

Alonso is the lynchpin of the Mets’ offseason. If he re-signs, it’ll be a sizable investment and likely one of the club’s biggest splashes of the winter. Then, the Mets can transition their focus back to pitching and run prevention as they strive to bounce back from missing the postseason. If Alonso signs elsewhere, then the Mets will need to pivot at first base while continuing to pursue a slew of upgrades at different spots across their roster.
