CNN anchor Jake Tapper hit a House Republican with a brutal fact-check during a live interview on Tuesday.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) joined Tapper on CNN's election night coverage, where Jordan answered questions about the ongoing government shutdown and how he thinks Republicans will fare during Tuesday's elections. Analysts have predicted Democrats to win big in elections spanning from the governor's offices in New Jersey and Virginia to the New York City mayoral race.
Tapper asked Jordan whether it is the job of a sitting congressperson to negotiate with the other party to find a way to end the shutdown. Republicans have repeatedly blamed Democrats for the shutdown, despite refusing to negotiate on parts of the funding bill that Democrats object to.
Jordan claimed that Democrats are refusing to pass a bill they approved on other occasions. Tapper stepped in to fact-check Jordan's answer.
"They're not exactly the same thing," Tapper said, noting that Trump's signature domestic policy bill made "significant changes" to health care policies in between those votes.
Jordan also bashed Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, who led in polls ahead of New York's mayoral election.
Tapper noted that it was ironic that Republicans fell in line behind Andrew Cuomo in the race, who ran as an independent. Republicans previously subpoenaed Cuomo to testify before Congress in 2024 over his decision to shut down New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Didn't House Republicans refer Cuomo to the U.S. Attorney's Office, remember?" Tapper asked Jordan.
House Republicans referred Cuomo for prosecution for making false statements, Politico reported at the time.
