History has been made in Virginia.
Democrat Abigail Spanberger is projected to be the first female governor in the history of the Commonwealth, topping Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, according to multiple reports.
As of 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, with 74 of 133 localities reporting in to the Virginia Board of Elections, Spanberger was leading Earle-Sears 57 percent to 42 percent, with nearly 150,000 more votes.
The projection was made by Decision Desk HQ at 7:19 p.m. on Tuesday, with other outlets confirming her expected win.
Spanberger had been leading in the final polls before the election, buoyed by a boisterous rally headlined by former President Barack Obama.
"We sent a message to the whole world that in 2025 Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship," the future governor said in her first speech after being elected.
"We chose our Commonwealth over chaos. You all chose leadership that will focus relentlessly on what matters most.
In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi was holding a lead over Republican John Reid II by approximately 10 points with more municipalities reporting results.
She was projected to win by multiple outlets as of 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The other big race in Virginia between embattled Jay Jones and incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares remains a coin flip situation with both sharing nearly 50 percent of the vote.
