SLIDELL, La. — She’s a 46-year-old preschool teacher who just taught everyone a lesson on citizenship.

“It was just a very interesting day for sure,” said Lesli Smith.

That day was Saturday, when Smith was out shopping at Fremaux Town Center in Slidell. Little did she know what was happening near her.

Inside the Dillard's department store, Slidell, Sgt. Jeff Kahrs had just approached a woman who was allegedly attempting to steal from Dillard's.

Body camera video shows the woman running out of the store. Sgt. Kahrs chased behind her. The chase through the parking lot ended when the woman jumped into a waiting car that sped off, driven by an alleged accomplice.

Watching it all happen was Smith, who offered Sgt. Kahrs a ride.
