Local governments in the Portland area are pledging new funds and support for families in need as access to federal food assistance remains in limbo.

The Trump Administration announced Monday that it would partially fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program after two federal judges ordered it to keep the food aid program running during the government shutdown.

But the continued shutdown, which is in its 35th day, and bottlenecks in rolling out those funds could leave families in the lurch. In response, the Portland area’s three most populous counties and the Metro regional government are trying to soften the blow.
