Premier David Eby says he wants to address both the historical injustices inflicted on Indigenous people in B.C. and the fears private property owners have around First Nations title after the recent Cowichan Tribes ruling.

The premiers opened the First Nations Summit in Vancouver on Tuesday with a press conference where he was grilled by reporters about his approach to the recent B.C. Supreme Court decision that grants Indigenous title to a portion of Richmond to the Cowichan.

The decision has about 150 property owners worried about whether they still have rights to their homes and businesses. Meanwhile, First Nations are worried the province’s “aggressive appeal” flies in the face of reconciliation efforts.
