Santa Feans living in City Council Districts 1 and 2 were deciding on new councilors Tuesday against the backdrop of an uncertain, crowded mayoral race that will shape the future of a city struggling with widespread voter discontent with the city's direction.
Both seats will be filled by newcomers, as District 1 Councilor Signe Lindell and District 2 Councilor Carol Romero-Wirth are stepping down. Incumbents Lee Garcia and Amanda Chavez face no opposition in Districts 3 and 4, respectively.
Three candidates have campaigned over the last several months to take the seat of longtime Councilor Lindell — who chose not to seek reelection — and represent District 1, which encompasses downtown Santa Fe, parts of the wealthy east side and a stretch between West Alameda Street and Cerrillos Road.
