RICHMOND, VA (LOOTPRESS) – Abigail Spanberger, a former Democratic congresswoman and CIA officer, has been elected Virginia’s next governor, making history as the state’s first female chief executive.
Spanberger defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears after a campaign focused on affordability and local concerns over federal job cuts and the ongoing government shutdown, which affect more than 300,000 federal employees in the state.
She frequently linked Earle-Sears to President Donald Trump, calling the Republican a Trump acolyte, though Trump did not endorse her.
Her victory flips the governor’s office from Republican control under Gov. Glenn Youngkin to Democratic leadership, providing a boost for national Democrats as they respond to a second Trump administration.
