KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon's proposal to increase the local option sales tax to fund infrastructure improvements and affordable housing was voted down Tuesday by city voters in the general election.

With 100% of precincts reporting, the 15,284 votes against far outpaced those the 9,546 in favor.

Kincannon had proposed raising the local option sales tax from 2.25% to 2.75%. City officials touted that it would generate up to $47 million of additional revenue each year and allow 20 years-worth of improvement projects to be completed over the next five years.

Projects that would have been supported by the increase included 75 additional miles of road paving, sidewalks within one mile of schools, and affordable housing as well as overdue city park maintenance.
